Stage Notes: North Texas theater loses three talents; review of ACT’s ‘Book of Will;’

This week, the North Texas theater community is reflecting on the tragic loss of three talented individuals. Matthew Posey, the founder and artistic director of Ochre House Theater, passed away on October 2 at the age of 68. A Houston native, Posey was instrumental in the local arts scene, establishing the Deep Ellum Theater Garage and launching Ochre House in 2008. He produced over 40 original plays, reflecting contemporary issues that resonated with audiences. A celebration of life service is forthcoming, with donations requested to the theater in lieu of flowers.

Additionally, local actors Julian Harris and Madi Duran tragically died in a car accident. Harris recently starred in ‘The Absentee,’ while Duran was cast in Hip Pocket Theatre’s upcoming production, ‘Mega Python vs. Gatoroid (The Musical),’ which has been postponed due to their untimely deaths. Both were celebrated for their talent and vibrant presence in the theatrical community.

In contrast to the somber news, ACT’s ‘The Book of Will,’ written by Lauren Gunderson, is currently showing and serves as a delightful tribute to friendship and theater. Set in the historical context of Shakespeare’s legacy, the play focuses on John Heminges and Henry Condell, who endeavor to compile the Bard’s works. Directed by Chris Berthelot, this production features strong performances by Robert San Juan and Anthony Magee, showcasing a heartfelt bond between the characters. Despite some pacing issues, the emotional depth and charm of the story shine through, making it a resonant experience for audiences. The show runs through October 18.
