Grand Prairie ISD cancels musical over female student in male lead role

Ana Mota, a 17-year-old senior, recently landed the role of Seymour in the upcoming production of Little Shop of Horrors at South Grand Prairie High School following rigorous auditions. However, just after a week of rehearsals, the Grand Prairie Independent School District made the decision to cancel the play, citing the implications of Senate Bill 12, Texas’ ‘anti-drag’ legislation, which prohibits certain portrayals in performances.

The district informed Ana that a female could not portray the male character due to the law’s restrictions. After Ana rejected the offer to assign the role to a male student and take a different part herself, the district opted to cancel the entire production. District officials emphasized adherence to their policies and existing laws, stating concerns about themes within the musical that reference abusive relationships. Ana has previously played male roles in school shows.
