Overtime Expenses for Dallas Police during World Cup Exceed $6 Million

Recent records acquired by NBC 5 Investigates indicate that the Dallas police incurred over $6.5 million in overtime expenses during the FIFA World Cup and the recent Republican midterm convention. The key issue now is whether the federal government will cover these costs or if Dallas taxpayers will need to shoulder part of the financial burden.
Throughout the summer, Dallas hosted the World Cup, with police providing round-the-clock security at event venues such as Fair Park and the international broadcast center. During the two World Cup months, overtime spending by the police department totaled over $14 million, which is approximately $6.6 million higher than the same period last year. A police spokesperson confirmed that around $6.1 million of that was specifically for World Cup-related activities.
The traffic unit responsible for motorcycle escorts was the largest contributor to this overtime expense, amounting to over $1.1 million. The Dallas SWAT team also played a significant role, accumulating just over $1 million in overtime. Following the conclusion of the World Cup, the department markedly reduced its overtime spending, reporting only about $2.4 million in the first 25 days of August.
Police Chief Daniel Comeaux has stated plans to monitor overtime carefully due to budget constraints. Although it’s expected that federal reimbursements will cover World Cup overtime expenses for taxpayers, the reimbursement process is complex. Additionally, there are uncertainties regarding reimbursements for the Republican convention, which incurred overtime costs exceeding $500,000.
